Abstract: Canadians tend to think about literary censorship as something that has had a chilling effect on societies other than their own. In this presentation P.J. Carefoote will trace the history of literary censorship across Canada from the 17th century to the present, considering what has changed and what hasn’t in our brave new digital world.

Bio: Pearce J. (P.J.) Carefoote is the Head of Rare Books and Special Collections at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto. Previously the Medieval Manuscripts and Early Books librarian at the same institution, he holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology in Church History from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and a Master of Information Studies from the University of Toronto. He is the author of Forbidden Fruit: Banned, Censored and Challenged Books from Dante to Harry Potter and most recently A Confusion of Printers: The Role of Print in the English Reformation, as well as the article on Censorship in 20th-century Canada in volume three of The History of the Book in Canada.
