Speaker: Christina E. Kramer, Slavic Languages and Literatures, U of T

Introducer/Host: Linda Hutcheon

Title: “Lines of Labour: Sound and Sense in Literary Translation”

Abstract: In her talk on translation, Kramer will discuss the workings of literary translations, from theory to practice, to engage with the processes in moving from one language to another. She will discuss different levels of linguistics from phonetics, to lexicon, to syntax, in order to explain the myriad decisions a translator makes in order to recreate a literary work in another language.

Bio: Christina E. Kramer is a professor emerita in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto, Canada. She has published numerous articles relating to Balkan linguistics and a Macedonian grammar (Univ. of Wisconsin Press). She has translated a number of novels. Her most recent novel, Fear of Barbarians by Petar Andonovski (winner of EU Prize for literature) was published this August by Parthian Books. Other translations include A Spare Life by Lidija Dimkovska (Two Lines Press, long-listed for Best Translated Book of the year), Freud’s Sister by Goce Smilevski (Penguin Books, 2012, Lois Roth Prize Honourable Mention), and three novels by Luan Starova My Father’s Books, The Time of the Goats (University of Wisconsin Press, 2012), and The Path of the Eels (supported by an NEA grant; Autumn Hill Books). Another novel by Lidija Dimkovska is coming out with Autumn Hill Book with the support of an NEAs and she has an on-going co-translation project with Rawley Grau on the poetry of Macedonian 20th-century poet, Aco Shopov.

Our gratitude to new Fellow Christina Kramer for stepping in on short notice to replace Carl James who postponed his talk because of the CAUT censure of the U of T.
