Daniel Mendelsohn, An Odyssey: A Father, A Son, and an Epic, 2017
Chair: Linda Hutcheon
(302 pp, available in e-book and audio-book format)
Part family memoir, part a study of Homer’s Odyssey, part travelogue, it eloquently tells the story of the author’s intellectual and emotional adventure that begins when his 81-year-old father enrolls in the classics seminar he teaches at Bard College on Homer’s Odyssey. The father’s aim: to learn about the “great literature” he had missed in his training as a research scientist and, in addition, to understand his son better. The classroom encounters—between father and son, and with the young students—are as amusing as they are moving and insightful. The father-son relationship further alters when the two take a trip together to retrace Odysseus’ famous voyages in the Mediterranean.
