Regenesis: Feeding the World without Devouring the Planet by George Monbiot (2022)
Discussion Leader: Sara Shettleworth
This book by an award-winning writer on environmental issues documents the ways in which the world’s system of agriculture and food distribution is exacerbating the effects of climate change. His proposed solutions to feeding a growing population may be surprising and perhaps revolting (protein brews based on bacteria anyone?). Notably, they do not include currently popular suggestions such as urban agriculture and greater reliance on local food, both of which he debunks, even while giving vivid real-life examples of farmers following such practices. Sure to be plenty to discuss. A taste of Monbiot’s general thesis can be found in his short TED talk at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK3z5H_Rfr0 (Available in all formats: 234 pages plus notes)
