- This event has passed.
July 14, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Speaker: Malcolm Cohen, NASA Ames (Emeritus) “Walking Your Dog on Mars?”
Introducer: Charlie Maurer; Host: Daphne Maurer
Bio: Malcolm Cohen worked for the U.S. Department of Defence, and then for NASA, researching how people function in the unusual environments of high-performance aircraft and spacecraft. His research involved conventional laboratory studies, studies done in human centrifuges under high-G loading, and studies under weightless conditions produced in parabolic flight. He has published extensively in journals on human perception, high-stress performance, and human factors in aerospace. Among his other awards, NASA honoured him with its Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal. In addition to his research over a period of more than 42 years, Cohen lectured at Stanford. There, he organized and taught the first undergraduate college course in the United States on Astrobiology and Space Exploration.
Abstract: Much of Cohen’s talk will come from his work on NASA and National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) committees that oversee research to solve the problems that need to be overcome to allow humans to survive a trip to Mars and to function effectively when they arrive. Cohen will also discuss some of the trade-offs between robotic and crewed missions to Mars, as well as reasons why we plan to venture there.
