Book Club: Jul 5, 2021: Bernardine Evaristo – Girl, Woman, Other
Chair: Linda Hutcheon
Joint winner (with Atwood’s The Testaments) for the 2019 Booker Prize, this novel follows the intertwining lives of a dozen Black British women of all ages, tackling (with humour and humanity, sympathy and grace) issues of race, gender, sexuality, and politics more generally. The Booker judges described it as “a must-read about modern Britain and womanhood” and the New Statesman claimed: “if you want to understand modern day Britain, this is the writer to read.”
BUT: be prepared for reading energy-driven prose without punctuation but with gloriously varied styles (to reflect the different folks’ minds/speech)—think of it as long-breath, free writing—I think you’ll find that it’s addictive.
Attached please find a one-page guide to keep by your side as you read what the New York Times calls this “big, busy novel with a large root system”.
