The Worlds I See: Curiosity, Exploration, and Discovery at the Dawn of AI by Fei-Fei Li (2023)
Discussion Leader: Susan Pfeiffer
The Worlds I See is part autobiography, part informative description of how our current approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) came to be. It is the story of a young woman whose parents struggled as Chinese immigrants in the United States. Their support for their daughter’s drive to pursue modeling of human intelligence contributed to amazing scientific discoveries. It is not clear whether the author’s aspirations to build socially supportive AI will become the dominant pattern, but her hopeful perspective is engaging. Li’s links to U of T, in conversation with Geoffrey Hinton, are available here: https://www.utoronto.ca/news/geoffrey-hinton-and-fei-fei-li-draw-thousands-talk-about-responsible-ai-development (Available in all formats; 322 pages)
