Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right by Jane Mayer (2017)
Discussion Leader: John David Stewart
Rated by the New York Times as one of the 10 best books of the year in 2017, this story by investigative journalist Jane Mayer uncovers a hidden underworld of billionaires in American politics that has operated over recent decades. The book chronicles in careful historical detail the ways in which wealthy tycoons, like the Koch brothers and others, used their money to build a radical right movement in America aimed at protecting their interests through the attempted capture of key American institutions, including the GOP party, the judicial branch, certain universities and policy think tanks.
