Yasha Mounk, The Great Experiment: Why Diverse Democracies Fall Apart and How They Can Endure (2022)

Discussion Leader: Max Nemni

In this most interesting, well-researched and well-written book noted political philosopher Yasha Mounk, asks two questions: 1) why are many democracies falling apart and 2) how can they be saved? He argues that the change “from monoethnic and monocultural democracies to multiethnic democracies” is at the heart of The Great Experiment. These new conditions require that current democracies, exhibiting a plurality of shapes and forms, must build tolerance and social cohesion, and not simply rely on institutional mechanisms like elections, rule of law, and minority rights to sustain democracy. Adopting an optimistic and practical approach, he outlines concrete steps diverse democracies can take to succeed. Reviewers have praised Mounk for writing “a magnificent book,” essential reading “for anyone interested in the future of liberal democracy.”
