Kyle Harper, From Shame to Sin: The Christian Transformation of Sexual Morality in Late Antiquity (2013)
Discussion Leader: David Milne
It is rare event for the Book Club to favour two books by the same author in its Program. Here the honour goes to the remarkable classicist Kyle Harper who first gave us his path-breaking historical account of The Fate of Rome, incorporating new evidence from epidemiology and climate science into the story of Rome’s decline. Here his lens focuses on sexuality in the Roman Empire – its open exhibition, its institutional practices of prostitution, sex slavery, same sex relations, family honour – and the “great watershed of [reactive and puritan] Christianization” that followed. Drawing upon sources in literature, philosophy and art, his account is a beautifully written and intriguing exploration of a sexual revolution that affects us all.
