David Graeber and David Wengrow, The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity (2021)
Discussion Leaders: Daphne Maurer, Susan Pfeiffer.
This book is a trailblazing account of humans through time, challenging our most fundamental assumptions about our remote ancestors and social evolution. Drawing on important research in anthropology and archaeology, the authors overturn our frozen images of the past and reveal new ways of thinking about the future. With arguments centered on challenging the dueling concepts of Rousseau and Hobbes, their global reach differs from popular authors like Jared Diamond, Yuval Noah Harari and Steven Pinker. They highlight perspectives of Indigenous philosophers like the Huron-Wendat Kandiaronk (c. 1649-1701) (see especially chapters 1 to 5). In addition to other global developments, they focus on the complexities of North American communities like the Calusa (chapter 4) and Cahokia (chapter 11). Their point – that human groups have always been flexible and complicated – supports what many have seen as a position aligned with the thinking of anarchists. (Available in all formats, even YouTube Four Minute Books; 534 pages plus notes).
