Abstract: Letters, diaries and newspaper accounts from the eighteenth century bear witness to colourful encounters between librarians and musicians in Europe, in the Ottoman Empire and in the south of India. This talk will explore the role of libraries as venues for musical performances, the reception of musical works into library collections, and the importance of descriptive bibliography, the study of the physical aspects of library holdings, in understanding how eighteenth-century music was performed. The talk will feature three excerpts from films of Tafelmusik concerts – The Galileo Project, The House of Dreams, and The Leipzig-Damascus Coffeehouse.
