Title: “English in Multicultural Toronto”

Abstract: This talk explores the diverse and innovative sounds and vocabulary of Toronto English in its multicultural context. I consider the intersecting influences of migration, race, place, and multilingualism in the development of what I call Multicultural Toronto English.
Bio: Derek Denis is an associate professor of linguistics in the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He is a sociolinguist who has worked primarily on linguistic variation and change in Canadian English, past and present. He is currently working a book titled “English in Multicultural Toronto: Ideologies of race and place in language variation and change”.
