Title: “The Evolution of the Space Telescopes”
Abstract: The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and now the James Web Space Telescope (JWST) are household words, abbreviations recognized by a sizeable fraction of the population. The evolution of such space-based observing instruments dates back into the 1960s. Further, many countries have contributed to the evolution and expansion of such telescopes. This talk will summarize the history of space-based observing assets and focus on the achievements of the HST and JWST.
Bio: Paul Delaney was the Director of the York University campus observatory, now the Allan I. Carswell Observatory, for some 30 years until his retirement in 2022. He has been a regular media contributor over that time and continues to enjoy presenting astronomy to the community. He is the recipient of many Teaching and Outreach awards.
