Title: “Food Insecurity in Canada: A Blind Spot in Public Policy”
Abstract: Household food insecurity refers to the inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial constraints. In Canada, the public face of this problem is food banks, but it has been measured and monitored on large population surveys for almost 30 years. The health implications of food insecurity are well understood, as is the social patterning of this problem and its relation to federal and provincial/territorial policy decisions. Yet, the number of Canadians experiencing food insecurity has reached crisis proportions, and food charity remains our primary response. Why has food insecurity become such a big problem in Canada and what will it take for us to deal with it?
Bio: Valerie Tarasuk is a newly minted Professor Emerita in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto. Over a career spanning almost three decades, she has forged an internationally recognized research program on the problem of household food insecurity. Her work has included several studies to elucidate the scope, nature, and health implications of food insecurity in Canada and examine the effectiveness of community-based responses. Since 2011, she has led PROOF, an interdisciplinary research program launched with funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and designed to identify effective policy approaches to reduce household food insecurity in Canada.
