Talk: Herman Daly’s Full World Economics: His Life and Ideas
Introducer: Ian Burton
Abstract: This lecture will be based on Peter Victor’s recently published biography of Herman Daly, a prize-winning economist who upset Neoclassical economists by arguing for steady state instead of growth economics. It will cover Daly’s early years growing up in Texas, his career in academia and the World Bank, and his debates with other economists about free trade, economic growth, the relevance of thermodynamics to economics, and the need for a steady-state economy.
Bio: Professor Peter A. Victor Ph.D., FRSC, received his Ph.D. in economics from UBC in 1971. He has worked for over 50 years in Canada and abroad on economy and environment as an academic, consultant and public servant. His work on ecological economics, notably on environmentally extended input-output analysis, ecological macroeconomics, and alternatives to economic growth, is widely cited. Peter’s contributions to ecological economics have been recognized through the award of the Molson Prize in the Social Sciences by the Canada Council for the Arts in 2011, the Boulding Memorial Prize from the International Society for Ecological Economics in 2014, and election to the Royal Society of Canada in 2015.
