Talk: “New Understandings of Great Lakes Indigenous History and Archaeology”

Introducer: Susan Pfeiffer

Abstract: Few people who hear the City of Toronto Land Acknowledgement understand why so many nations are recognised or appreciate what the implications of this complex history might be for people living here today.  Ron Williamson will summarise this history, which begins around 13,000 years ago, and discuss the implications of both treaty agreements and traditional territory claims and how this relates to land use planning and development.

Bio: Ronald F. Williamson is founder of Archaeological Services Inc. and holds an Honours BA from the University of Western Ontario and MA and PhD from McGill University, all in Anthropology. He has published extensively on both Indigenous and early colonial Great Lakes history. In 2016, he was conferred the Smith-Wintemberg award, the Canadian Archaeological Association’s most prestigious award for outstanding contributions to Canadian Archaeology, and in 2019, he was given Heritage Toronto’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
