Speaker: Sharon Vattay, architectural historian, cultural heritage specialist
Topic: “Toronto’s Massey Music Hall: Conservation in Practice”
Abstract: This lecture offers a behind-the-scenes look at the recent revitalization of a nineteenth-century music hall, updated to meet twenty-first-century standards. The presentation will recount the complexities involved in conserving such an iconic historic structure, emphasizing the application of international principles in conservation practice. Special attention will be given to the role of architectural history in ensuring the success of the project, illustrating how understanding the building’s past contributes to successful conservation strategies.
Bio: Sharon Vattay is an architectural historian and cultural heritage specialist with experience in the public, private and academic sectors. As a Principal at GBCA in Toronto, her portfolio of work includes a wide variety of projects (from small scale restorations to major rehabilitation projects). Prior to joining GBCA, Sharon was a Heritage Planner in the public sector (in the cities of Hamilton and Vaughan) and a Lecturer at the University of Toronto – she continues to educate the next generation of heritage specialists through courses in the Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. In addition to being a professional member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals, Sharon is an active member of a number of allied organizations, such as the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, the Society of Architectural Historians, and the Association of Preservation Technology.
