Wednesday Talk: Oct. 16, 2024, 10am-12pm – hybrid
- This event has passed.
October 16 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Speaker: Nandita Bajaj, Executive Director, Population Balance
Title: “Connecting the Dots between Reproductive Autonomy and Environmental Sustainability”
Abstract: Human population has doubled in the last 50 years, growing from approximately four billion in 1970 to eight billion currently. There is rising public awareness that overpopulation and rampant overconsumption are driving climate change, resource scarcity, and biodiversity collapse, yet it is a challenging issue to discuss. In this talk, Nandita will discuss the pervasive forces of patriarchy, economic growth, and human exceptionalism as drivers of population growth, as well as reproductive and ecological injustice, and the implications of the silencing of this discourse on the most vulnerable – nature, people, and animals.
Bio: Nandita Bajaj is the Executive Director of Population Balance, a US nonprofit that works to inspire narrative, behavioural, and system change that shrinks our human impact and elevates the rights and wellbeing of people, animals, and the planet. She also co-hosts The Overpopulation Podcast, a popular series that delves into the nuances of the drivers and impacts of human expansionism with expert guests (including Paul Ehrlich, Naomi Oreskes, Alan Weisman, and Angela Saini). She is also a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Humane Education at Antioch University, where she teaches about the same subject matter.
